WA food ambassador Don Hancey has the recipe to keeping healthy this Christmas – fruit on the barbecue.
Last week, Mr Hancey showed Community Newspaper Group how easy it was to cook up West Australian Linley Valley pork and fruit on the barbecue at his Osborne Park kitchen.
“What pork loves over Christmas is apple and sage,” he said.
“Everyone does barbecues over Christmas and just about the whole year round so it’s really easy to grill fruit on the barbecue… even the kids can do it.
“Apple is perfect but also pineapple and apricots.”
City Beach resident and doctor Joe Kosterich said eating fruit and good quality meat was the perfect combination at Christmas.
“If there’s a time of year people are going to over do it it’s going to be Christmas,” Dr Kosterich said.
“But if you’re going to have a bigger Christmas lunch than normal don’t stress about it, you can pick up the pieces on Boxing Day.
“Being aware of portion sizes, that’s always the key.”
Mr Hancey finished the dish with a new product, apple bourbon, and chilli salt.
“Christmas is about taking it easy, I still have a sleep after Christmas lunch,” he said.
“It’s all about balance.”
