Northern Beaches Cycling Club president Chris Howard said the club was looking for enthusiastic cyclists aged eight to 16 for its youth racing squad.

‘The great thing about cycling is the rapid improvement that can be gained with the right training,’ Dr Howard said.

‘Racing accommodates a variety of athletic abilities, from powerful sprinters to endurance specialists and light weight hill climbers.

‘Training sessions can also be a great opportunity for quality father-son or mother-daughter time.

‘Ideally we want to have a network of midweek training sessions available in suburbs such as Whitfords, Joondalup/Wanneroo and Jindalee.’

Dr Howard said the squad had started training for the summer criterium race season, which will include its event the Yanchep National Park Challenge in early 2014, and state titles in March.

The club will offer free use of junior road bikes to members so they can have a go before committing to the sport and buying their own bike.

Club training rides, catering for adults and children, are pedalled from Jindalee each Sunday morning.
