DESPITE operating at half-strength, an All Saints’ College Year 7 maths team calculated its way to first place in the recent Have Sum Fun Online 2017 competition.

The nationwide online math quiz is usually tackled by teams of four but All Saints’ pair Xiaoyu Chen and Julius Clegg beat out 77 other schools to secure top spot.

All Saints’ year 10 and 9 teams finished second and third respectively.

The Have Sum Fun Online competition presents participants with a series of Naplan-type problems and is open to students across Australia for years 3 to 10.

All Saints’ senior school math teacher Monique Ellement said the College had entered smaller teams this year but that had not proved a barrier to success.

“We place a real emphasis on teaching our students to solve complex, real world problems using mathematics, not just how to answer test questions,” she said.
