Southern suburbs projects among WA heritage awards finalists

Gabrielle Becerra MelletPerthNow - Canning

A raft of heritage works and projects in the southern suburbs have been named finalists in the upcoming State Heritage Awards.

The awards, which have been held since 1992, celebrate the best examples of some of the ways localities have conserved, reused or promoted contributions to heritage areas.

This year’s awards received 35 nominations. Award winners will be announced October 13.

The Old Synagogue, Fremantle

A Fremantle hotspot, the Old Synagogue is a twice State heritage-listed venue in the heart of Fremantle.

The South Terrace site was revamped in 2019 after previously sitting vacant for more than a decade.

The eatery and bar has been nominated for its contribution to “conservation and adaptive reuse work”.

The Heritage Council said the project was “innovative” in using existing buildings to produce a series of different spaces.

Warders Cottages, Fremantle

The Warders Block W2 Hotel is also nominated in the conservation and adaptive reuse category.

The accommodation is next to the Fremantle Markets and has plans to expand, with construction already underway for The Convict Establishment Hotel.

Award judges noted the current development’s approach to “preserving” the streetscape and values of the cottages, ensuring the adaptation reworked little of the heritage fabric.

City of Canning heritage officer Geoff Moor

City of Canning heritage officer Geoff Moor has worked in the local government sector for more than 40 years.

The Canning staff member has worked within the development of the city’s heritage master plan and local government heritage surveys.

Mr Moor was said to contribute a “deep” and “broad” knowledge of local history.

Ghost Walks, City of Gosnells

Twice nominated, the City of Gosnells ghost walks tour has made it as a finalist.

The tour takes participants on a performance-based experience through local and State heritage areas of significance.

A dozen “ghost” actors are spread throughout the areas and tell stories from the locality’s early settler history.
