An extension to a heritage precinct house on Langsford Street has won a 2024 Town of Claremont Civic Design Award.

The Civic Design Awards promote Claremont’s rich history by honouring exceptional projects that conserve, maintain and adapt heritage places.

The 1930s bungalow at 13 Langsford Street was the best entry in the category of additions to a heritage place after the original home was conserved while a substantial extension to accommodate a family of five was added.

The judges were impressed with designer Humphrey Homes’ work in preserving many of the original features, including the jarrah floorboards, fireplaces, leadlight windows, stained glass entry door, facade brickwork, ceiling plasterwork and mouldings.

Other category winners included St Aidan’s Uniting Church for the conservation of a heritage place, Christ Church Grammar School for special projects, Claremont Museum for new building on a heritage site, and Claremont Hotel for commercial projects.

Mayor Jock Barker said heritage preservation was important to the Town of Claremont.

“A defining characteristic of current-day Claremont is its commitment to heritage preservation,” he said.

“Our heritage places serve as reminders of our past, connecting us to those who came before us and inspiring future generations.

“The Town of Claremont is committed to safeguarding our heritage and ensuring the town remains a vibrant and thriving community with that distinct Claremont feel.”
