Plans for a new dog park and wetland buffer expansion in the City of Canning are about to start.

Works with the Department of Biodiversity, Conservation and Attractions will extend the Wilson Wetland buffer, which is needed to protect local wetlands from pollutants and ongoing disturbances.

Work will also soon start on a new off-leash dog exercise area in the Kent Street Weir Precinct, which will be 5500sqm with shelters, seating, digging sand pit, secure fencing and lighting.

Mayor Patrick Hall said the upgrades should begin this month.

“Enhancing and improving our recreational opportunities for our residents is also important,” he said.

“The improvements to the dog exercise will encourage more of the community to come together and to use the facility, which is extremely positive.”

The City of Canning is also working on the next stage of the Kent Street Weir Precinct plan, which includes building a district-level playground, shelters, storage for the Canning River Canoe Club and other parkland infrastructure.
