Westfield Carousel: Perth shopping centre extends trading hours and opens Sephora

Gabrielle Becerra MelletPerthNow - Canning

Westfield Carousel is grabbing a bigger slice of the Friday night action and pulling in international beauty retailer Sephora for the show.

From October 6, the Cannington shopping centre will become the first in the suburbs to offer large scale Friday night trading.

It comes on the back of the Perth Airport Woolworths opening this week with its own specially extended hours, because Dunreath Village shopping centre is on Commonwealth land.

At Carousel 135 retailers are confirmed to take the opportunity to open longer on Fridays, including Myer, JD, Cotton On Mega, H&M and Peter Alexander.

A spokesperson said the move to offer more nighttime hours followed community feedback and the success of the traditional late night Thursdays.

Carousel centre manager Jacqueline McKenzie said it would also add flexibility for shoppers at what is currently WA’s biggest shopping and dining complex.

“Our customers’ lifestyles have evolved, with an increased demand for longer hours outside of the standard nine-to-five on weekends,” she said.

“We’re excited to be the first suburban destination to offer Friday night extended trade to our community, giving them more flexibility to visit our centre and stay for longer.”

The initiative will launch with a bang and a suite of live entertainment on October 6, including an appearance from Australian rapper Allday and a heap of giveaways.

And just six days later Sephora is set to open at Carousel, with a 350sqm store including a beauty studio and an assortment of high-end brands, including Fenty Beauty by Rihanna and Tarte.

It will be the 28th Australian site for the French multinational retailer but only the third for Perth shoppers.

Its Karrinyup counterpart threw open its doors in October 2021. A Perth CBD store opened last year.

A pre-opening party is set to mark the occasion at Carousel, with influencer and content creator Emily Davies, a DJ and beauty stations on the cards for shoppers.

The extended trade initiative will launch a week after Perth’s new airport supermarket opens its doors to WA shoppers.

The Woolworths supermarket, which borders retail giant Costco, is set to trade 7am until 7pm on weekends and until 9pm during the week.

Australian Retail Association chief executive Paul Zahra welcomed the extended trading hour provisions and said the State Government needed to do more in their approach to “modernise” trading hours.

“Customers expect to shop where and when they like in a physical store as they do online. The settings in WA are restrictive and don’t reflect an international city,” he said.

“There is a significant disadvantage to WA retailers — it inhibits their ability to maximise sales at a time when higher costs of doing business and higher levels of debt are creating significant pressure, particularly for small businesses.”

Retail trading hours are restricted to 5pm on Saturdays and Sundays for the metropolitan area, while traders can choose to operate up to 9pm weekdays.

Cannington’s 51-year-old shopping complex has undergone its fair share of redevelopment over previous decades.

It began as Boans Waverley before morphing into the multi-million dollar complex it is today.

Westfield Carousel sprawls across 109,753 sqm, a size closely followed by Karrinyup Shopping Centre in Perth’s north.
