City of Canning awarded for ‘sector leading’ approach to road safety

The State’s peak body for local government has given the green light to a southern suburbs council’s approach to road safety.

The City of Canning took home two accolades at the 2023 WA Local Government Road Safety Awards in August: one for complimentary initiatives and the other in the local road safety partnerships category.

The first was a nod to a 2022 Speed Zone on Local Streets Survey, which aimed to hear what the community thought about vehicle speeds.

The project was a widespread effort to hear from locals and reached more than 84,000 residents.

Mayor Patrick Hall said the undertaking had led to a fantastic outcome for the city.

“The data from the survey and traffic count has allowed the city to understand the extent of speeding behaviour in our road network, identify perceived and real speed issues and to target speed management actions to high-risk areas, making roads safer for everyone,” he said.

The latter award was for a Canning Road Safety Management Plan in 2022 which aimed to reduce the number of people killed or seriously injured on local roads.

The plan identified neighbourhoods with disproportionate casualty crash histories and sought to reduce road trauma.

The City of Greater Geraldton was also recognised for a Safe System Approach in the urban category.
